For Sale By Owners Homes Sell for 25% Less, 2023 Report

December 19, 2022

The National Association of Realtors, NAR, puts out an annual in-depth research report on what actually causes homes to sell across the U.S., down to a percentage point. This annual report also includes information on for sale by owner homes, how many there were in the last year and how they performed versus Realtor listed homes. In 2022, a full 10% of homeowners sold their property FSBO, or for sale by owner. This was a pretty big increase from the 2021 report and most believe it is due to the ever increasing low inventory, a wildly strong sellers market, which led more homeowners to try FSBO than in previous years. Also, desperate homebuyers tried contacting more homeowners direct, that didn’t...

For sale by owner homes sold for much less in 2021 than homes represented by real estate agents, 14% less, which we will explain here. For Sale By Owner Rates Have Dropped Consistently Over the Years The 7% of FSBO home sales in 2021 was down by 1% from 2020. For Sale By Owner (FSBO) – a good idea? 2018 update

March 19, 2018

In 2017, 89% of homeowners in the real estate market nationwide sold their home using a real estate agent or broker, according to the National Association of Realtors. 8% of home sellers offered their home For Sale By Owner (FSBO) for the third year in a row. 3% used a different method such as a company provided relocation company. For Sale By Owner Rates Keep Dropping The For Sale By Owner rate has been steadily dropping since the NAR first began keeping track in 1981. That year, 15% of home sellers chose FSBO instead of using a real estate agent. By 2007, that number had declined to 12%, and despite the housing market turmoil over the last decade, the rate...

For Sale By Owner in Portland, Oregon – A good idea?

December 4, 2017

According to the NAR (National Association of Realtors) 2017 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers Report, For Sale By Owner (FSBO) home sellers are at an all-time low. From 2015 to 2017 only 8% of home sellers choose to sell for sale by owner. In city metros only 6% of sellers tried FSBO home sales. Why For Sale By Owner? According to the same NAR report, of the 8% of home sellers that tried FSBO, 69% of them did so because they already knew the buyer. For Sale By Owner in Portland, A Good Idea?

February 14, 2017

Let’s face it: We live in a do-it-yourself world. Self-checkout at the grocery store, online services like Uber and Airbnb that turn everyday citizens into taxi drivers and hotel managers, and phone apps that make it easier to ask Google than a real person. Are we getting more advanced, or just more disconnected? I’m just a real estate agent, so I won’t get into that philosophical argument — I want to talk about the way this trend has affected home buying and selling in Portland. Namely, what’s up with FSBOs (for sale by owner homes)? Forces influencing the Portland real estate market today make it more tempting than ever for sellers to forgo a listing agent and list their home...

For Sale by Owner? Go Ahead, Sell for Less

October 19, 2015

In this hopping Portland sellers’ market, homeowners may be tempted to forgo the real estate agent and sell their home For Sale By Owner. No paying real estate agent commissions (or maybe just pay the buyer’s agent commission), setting the price you want to get for your home — sounds great, right? As a real estate agent for over a decade here in the Portland metro area, I would advise you to consider all of the facts when deciding to list your home as a FSBO if you want to sell it for its maximum value. The key is to attract multiple buyers and offers, which isn’t as easy as it sounds even if your home is in a desirable...

Should I Sell a FSBO (For Sale By Owner) in Portland?

November 12, 2013

According to the NAR (National Association of Realtors) 2013 report, only 9% of today’s sellers are FSBO (For Sale By Owner). This is close to the Portland Real Estate Market as well, where NAR report 8% of Urban market areas are FSBO. Are FSBO sellers successful? In a recent Fall 2012 survey a huge study was done of home sellers nationwide by HomeGain. The survey reported sellers who used real estate agents were twice as likely to sell their home than FSBO. About 2/3 of home sellers who used a real estate agent successfully sold their home, while only 1/3 of FSBO owners sold their home. Of those who did sell, according to the NAR report, 40% knew the buyer...
