Six Fall Home Selling Tips

Selling a home in Portland this fall? Here are six things I always tell my clients:

1. Clean up the yard. I mean it! Get your weekend workout by raking leaves, getting rid of dead plants and cleaning up edges of flower beds. Curb appeal is hugely important for selling a home, and while autumn in Portland is often beautiful, the yards are frequently not. Your home will gain value in the eyes of potential buyers by just having this one thing taken care of — and you don’t have to spend a dime.

2. Selling a high-end home? Ask your real estate agent to do more than simply post your home on RMLS and other third-party real estate websites. Great architecture and stunning views cannot be captured fully in professional photos, it can take a drone video or a 3D tour to do your home justice. See our luxury package here.

3. Make sure your listing photos are updated. If you first listed your home in June, it’s time to call your real estate agent to work on some new shots of your home in fall splendor! Outdated photos are a turn-off for buyers, and you can never underestimate the power of the first impression. Also talk to your agent about “refreshing” the MLS if your home has been sitting on the market for a while.

4. Keep seasonal decorations simple. Dressing up your home for fall can add some beautiful accents, but beware of taking it too far. Cozy blankets, candles and fall foliage indoors are great; skeletons and spiders can stay in the closet until you move.

5. Don’t abandon outdoor spaces just yet! While it’s definitely time to take down the kiddie pool, nobody’s saying that outside time is over. Remind buyers that Portland has three seasons of outdoor enjoyment by giving your lawn chairs some cheery cushions and arranging them around a fire pit.

6. Use a Portland real estate agent and be ready to negotiate. The first great step you’ve made as a home seller is to find a dedicated real estate agent who will get the job done. I represent Portland home owners throughout the entire home selling process. Yes, that means through the holidays and on weekends if necessary. I work with the seller the whole way, so if you’re planning a busy holiday season, I recommend waiting to list your home until your calendar clears (besides the market will be better once the holidays are past).

Portland has some of the best fall weather and the real estate market is great, too. Need to sell soon? Check out my listing package and feel free to compare it against another agent’s.

What My Clients Are Saying

We have worked with many Realtors over the years and Stephen is by far the best we have ever met. He's very knowledgeable and gets the job done quickly. We had multiple offers after one day, not because we were under priced but because we had maximum exposure at the appropriate price!
